Two years after her first U.S tour in 2019, Calcanhotto comes to the U.S with a mix of classics and new singles shown first hand to the American audience. Performing with nothing more than her guitar, a style she became well known for, Adriana’s Call Me is powerful yet minimalistic.
The concert is set to begin with the new single Lovely. The setlist includes some of her favorite English lyrics songs: Music (Madonna), Back to Black (Amy Winehouse) and Nature boy (Eden Ahbez). As well as songs that became the soundtrack for millions of fans in Brazil and worldwide. Era Pra Ser, Esquadros, Mais Feliz and Cariocas will be performed among new singles, such as Veneno Bom.
Even before its oficial release in July 2021, Veneno Bom was awarded with the honorable mention at 2020’s International Songwriting Competition. It is part of a group of ten songs written by Adriana while in isolation at her home in Rio de Janeiro in 2020. Nine of those compositions led to her most recent album. Só is a provocative work that combines strong elements of Brazilian Funk with the roots of the most acclaimed rhythms in the country: Samba and Bossa Nova. It was released in a time when the Brazil was being deeply affected by the pandemic.
During the Covid-19 crisis Adriana Calcanhotto has proved to be one the most proactive artists in her country. She used art as a call for change. Her strongest composition is 2 de Junho, a protest song about the death of the five year old black boy, Miguel Otavio Santana da Silva. The case sparked discussions about the deeply rooted history of racism in the country and how it has been aggravated during the pandemic. 2 de junho was recorded and performed by one of the most renowned Brazilian singers, Maria Bethânia.
Although Adriana’s work could never be defined by one single style or category, her career has naturally evolved as an intersection of music and literature. Calcanhotto’s performances and collaborations has helped to popularize the work of national and foreign poets and writers such as Augusto de Campos , Waly Salomão and Mário de Sá-Carneiro. Since 2015, Calcanhotto had joined Universidade de Coimbra as university ambassador, acting as visiting lecturer on song composition courses and as an artist-in-residence.
Adriana Calcanhotto began her professional career in 1984. She has released over 20 albums, achieving multiplatinum sales, accumulating performances worldwide in Europe, Japan and the United States. In more than 30 years, Calcanhotto has collaborated with some of the most renowned Brazilian artists, such as Marisa Monte and Gilberto Gil – after the U.S tour, Adriana will join Gil as the opening performer for the musician’s European tour.
In 2021, being among the first and few artists to announce an international tour after being fully vaccinated and following all the Covid-19 protection protocols, Adriana proves once again how she embraces the most relevant role an artist can play: to present the public with fundamental portions of life in times of crisis.
